Abstract

Creation of an Online Critical Thinking Resource

Critical thinking is necessary for nursing practice, providing a mechanism to organize thinking for complex professional issues. Critical thinking is considered an essential component of nursing education and is an identified standard of nursing practice (American Nurses Association, 2003). In a search of the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature database, more than 1,100 critical thinking-related articles published between 1995 and 2006 appeared in the English language nursing literature; more than 150 of these have been published since the beginning of 2005. The volume of critical thinking articles in the nursing literature speaks to the interest and importance of this construct in nursing education. Although nurse educators are aware of the importance of critical thinking in education, teaching practices and strategies to promote student gains in critical thinking remain an underdeveloped potential.
