The Value of Reality Orientation with Older Adults Who Are Mentally Ill: A Study from the Republic of Ireland

Declan Patton, RPN, RNT, BNS (Hons), MSc, PGDipEd

Abstract

The goal of this study is to bring to the fore information that provides greater insight into the value of Reality Orientation (RO) in caring for older adults. More particularly, the author conducted this study for two reasons. First, he observed a tendency for himself and his colleagues to use RO in caring for older adults with mental illness, and second, there exists a paucity of recent research-based literature related to RO. The majority of research articles reviewed were quite old, originating in the late 1970s to early 1980s (e.g., Brook, Degun, and Mather [1975]; Zepelin, Wolfe, and Kleinplatz [1981]). Finally, this article focuses on how nurses perceived RO within an elderly mental health care setting within the Republic of Ireland.
