Obesity linked to lower sperm quality

November 15, 2017

Read the Perspective from Stephanie Page, MD, PhD

Obesity was associated with lower sperm volume, number, concentration and motility, and higher chance of sperm defects, according to findings published in Andrologia.

“Previous studies on obesity and sperm parameters have shown mixed results. Ramaraju, MBBS, DNB, from the Center for Assisted Reproduction at the Krishna IVF Clinic in India, and colleagues wrote. “Automation of semen analysis using computer-aided sperm analysis has the potential to overcome these drawbacks and improve overall reliability. However, there is a paucity of information on sperm motility and morphometry using [computer-aided sperm analysis], especially from human studies.”
