VIDEO: Expert discusses cases of hepatitis E, PSC in patients with IBD

ORLANDO — In this exclusive video from Advances in IBD 2017, Edward V. Loftus, Jr., MD, professor of medicine in the division of gastroenterology and hepatology at the Mayo Clinic, discusses a panel presentation on liver disease in patients with inflammatory bowel disease.

The cases included a patient with hepatitis E virus infection, a patient who developed autoimmune hepatitis during treatment with Remicade (infliximab, Janssen), and a patient with Crohn’s disease who developed primary sclerosing cholangitis.

“If you don't have a firm explanation, maybe go beyond your typical viral serologies like A, B and C, and think about hepatitis E,” Loftus told Healio Gastroenterology and Liver Disease, regarding the first case he discussed “We generally think of this as being endemic in developing countries or pregnant women getting hepatitis E, but it is being increasingly seen domestically”

Disclosures: Loftus reports financial relationships with AbbVie, Allergan, Amgen, Celgene, Celltrion, CVS Caremark, Eli Lilly, Genentech, Gilead, Janssen, MedImmune, Mesoblast, Pfizer, Robarts Clinical Trials, Salix, Seres, Takeda and UCB.
