Video: Thyroid nodule research offers new techniques for assessing cancer risk

WASHINGTON — In this video exclusive, Stephanie L. Lee, MD, PhD, professor of medicine and director of the Thyroid Health Center, section of endocrinology, diabetes and nutrition at Boston Medical Center, and Endocrine Today Editorial Board Member, affiliation, discusses research on thyroid nodules presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Thyroid Association. She also offers her predictions for future breakthroughs.

One presentation described using an artificial intelligence algorithm to assist in risk for cancer from ultrasound images of nodules. The diagnostic system was as accurate as an expert thyroid sonographer. In another presentation, researchers shared data from a study of more than 20,000 biopsies taken over 20 years to identify specific cancer risk factors.
