A carotid body tumor can occur and are considered a “paraganglioma” since it originates from neurons. They develop in the carotid body which normally helps to regulate oxygen, carbon dioxide and pH levels in the system. Carotid body tumors are usually diagnosed as an asymptomatic neck mass, however cranial nerve involvement or a hoarse voice from compression of the recurrent laryngeal nerve can occur. The usual treatment is surgical resection, however radiation therapy can be utilized as well.
