A pouch, or ileal pouch, is created during bowel reconstruction surgery following total proctocolectomy for patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) or familial adenomatous polyposis. Approximately one-third of patients with UC eventually require colectomy for medically refractory disease or dysplasia. Restorative proctocolectomy with ileal pouch–anal anastomosis (IPAA) has become the surgical procedure of choice for patients with colectomy.
