EPIDEMIOLOGY Pancreatitis in pregnancy is a rare entity. Historically, incidence was reported as 1 in 12,000 pregnancies.1-4 However, in recent retrospective analyses, incidence was found to vary from 1 in 1000 to 1 in 3000 cases.1,4-7 This increase in incidence is likely related to several factors, the most important being the ability to diagnose pancreatitis by serum amylase and lipase levels, which was not possible in the 1970s.2 In general, pancreatitis occurs in nulliparous women one-third of the time and in multiparous women…
