There are little or no data to suggest that any therapy can alter the natural history of Barrett’s, though logic suggests that effect therapy—whether medical or surgical—would do so. Medical therapy has not been systematically studied, nor have the randomized follow-up studies been performed. Studies that have compared medical and surgical therapy for GERD have for the most part excluded patients with Barrett’s.
