According to the National Health and Nutrition Survey III (NHANES III), obesity in American children ages 12 to 19 years increased from 15% in 1985 to 21% in 1995. Today, over 27% of children under 12 years of age are obese, indicating a 54% increase in obesity in the United States within the past 20 years. Of this increase, the super-obese (greater than 50% overweight) are becoming even heavier.
