Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is like ice cream. It comes in a wide spectrum of colors and flavors. In my practice, which focuses on patients with functional gastrointestinal disorders, I tell my patients that although many IBS patients have similar symptoms, all patients are unique in why their symptoms developed and how their symptoms are expressed. Although we now have a much better explanation for why IBS develops in some patients (see Chapters 13 and 14), the truth is that we clearly do not understand all of the etiologic factors that lead to the development of IBS.
