Diabetes is a systemic disorder, and its resultant neuropathy and vasculopathy can affect any organ in the body including those of the gastrointestinal tract. Although diabetic motility disorders of the upper gastrointestinal tract, such as diabetic gastroparesis, are well described, motility disorders affecting the colon, although common, are less well studied. Patients with diabetes and visceral neuropathy can have symptoms of constipation, diarrhea, fecal incontinence, and rarely steatorrhea due to several mechanisms.
