In patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and cirrhosis, liver transplantation offers the best chance for a cure because it removes both the tumor and the cirrhotic tissue from which new tumors can form. When transplantation was initially performed for HCC, 5-year survival rates were 30% to 40%. It was then determined that the tumor stage at the time of transplant influenced survival rates.
