Chapter 51: Basal Acid Output Test (continued)

Mouen A . Khashab, MD

A basal acid output (BAO) study measures the amount of acid in the stomach after fasting for 8 hours (baseline acid level). This test is performed to evaluate the effectiveness of acid suppression (with PPIs, H2 blockers, or surgical vagotomy) and to evaluate the patient for hyperacidity.
