Chapter 11: EGD With Narrow Band Imaging (continued)

Eun Ji Shin, MD

Narrow band imaging (NBI) is a lighting system based on narrowing the bandwidth of transmitted light using optical filters. This allows fewer wavelengths of light within the RGB (red, green, blue) spectrum to pass through the optical fibers of the endoscope. Blue light, a shorter wavelength, penetrates only the superficial layers, improving imaging resolution. This technology is useful in the early detection of dysplasia of Barrett’s esophagus especially if used in combination with topical application of acetic acid, a mucolytic.
