Acute gastroenteritis ranks second to acute respiratory illness among the most common diseases worldwide, and it is a frequent cause of childhood malnutrition and mortality. The annual rate of acute diarrheal illness ranges from 0.4 to 1.3 episodes per year among adults and 2 to 3 episodes per year in children in developed countries to up to 10 to 18 episodes per year among children in developing countries.
