Patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) commonly have a variety of gastrointestinal and extraintestinal manifestations. A twofold increase in these co morbidities has been reported. Gastrointestinal manifestations include gastroesophageal reflux, dyspepsia, functional constipation, fecal incontinence, and lactose intolerance. More recently, there has been increased attention paid to a possible relationship with disorders such as celiac disease and inflammatory bowel disease (Figure 25-1).
