Skin cancers are among the most common malignancies in the United States. Skin cancers can be categorized into melanoma and nonmelanoma skin cancers (NMSC). The rate of melanoma has nearly tripled in the white population over the past 20 years. However, the absolute risk of melanoma remains markedly lower than that of NMSC. In 2006 alone, over 3.5 million NMSCs were diagnosed in the United States.1 NMSC is further categorized into squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and basal cell carcinoma (BCC).
