The treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) is undergoing a major paradigm shift from interferon-based treatment regimens to interferon-free treatment regimens. Between 2011 and 2014, four new direct-acting antiviral (DAA) medications were approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA). At the time of publication, 15 to 20 new DAA medications are expected to compete for FDA approval in the next 4 to 5 years.
