Several medications are currently available for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection (Table 10-1). These can be divided into 2 basic categories; interferons and oral antiviral agents. Both standard interferon alfa-2b and peginterferon alfa-2a have been shown to be effective and are approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).1,2 Four oral antiviral agents have also been FDA approved;3-8 tonofovir is also known to be effective against HBV and will likely be approved within the near future.
