Alosetron (Prometheus Laboratories Inc., San Diego, Calif) is classified as a serotonin (5- HT) receptor antagonist. More specifically, alosetron acts on the 5- HT3 receptor, which is found throughout the enteric neurons in the colon and small intestine, as well as the central nervous system. A number of preclinical studies demonstrated that by blocking the 5- HT3 receptor, alosetron can influence both sensory and motor function of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.
