Janani Deffendall, PhD; Andrea King, PhD

Tobacco use has been identified as the primary preventable cause of illness and death in the United States, accounting for more than 435,000 deaths annually.1 Prevalence estimates indicate that approximately 21% of American adults smoke, which amounts to approximately 45 million adult smokers.2 Although 70% of smokers want to quit, only approximately 5% are successful in unaided quit attempts. Quit rates can increase substantially (up to 40%) with approved pharmacotherapy and psychological interventions.3
