Most patients in the United States with portal hypertension have cirrhosis. Although cirrhosis is the 12th leading cause of death in the United States in general, it is the fourth leading cause of death of people between the ages of 45 and 54. Most patients who die due to cirrhosis die from one or more of the complications of cirrhosis, detailed here.
