Surgical resection or transplant offers the best chance of cure for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). One’s first thought when approaching a patient with this cancer should be to evaluate whether he or she is a candidate for either of these therapies. Although liver resection is the simplest option, HCC most often occurs in a cirrhotic liver, as cirrhosis is the most prevalent risk factor for HCC.
