Septoplasty using bony batten grafts may have utility in fixing caudal septal deviation

Septoplasty using bony batten grafts was associated with favorable efficacy and safety in correcting caudal septal deviation.

The retrospective cohort study included 141 patients with caudal septal deviation who underwent endonasal septoplasty between Sept. 1, 2011 and Feb. 29, 2016.

The study included primary and secondary surgery groups, along with those who underwent septoplasty plus turbinate surgery and those who underwent only septoplasty. Symptom improvement and Nasal Obstruction Symptoms Evaluation (NOSE) scores served as primary endpoints.

Results indicated that 61% of the cohort reported much improvement in symptoms after the procedure. Another 35.5% reported improvement, while 2.8% reported no change and 0.7% reported a worsening of symptoms. A significant improvement in mean postoperative NOSE scores also was reported, from 28.7 (95% CI, 25-32.4) to 70.5 (95% CI, 66-75).

NOSE scores for 116 patients treated with primary surgery (28.2) and 25 treated with secondary surgery (30.8) were not significantly different. Similarly, no differences in NOSE score were reported between patients in the turbinate group (28.1) and patients in the septoplasty only group (30.4).

Endoscopic examination findings showed that 90.8% of the cohort had a straight septum, while 9.2% demonstrated residual caudal deviation, according to the findings.

Four patients experienced septal hematoma, two patients experienced hyposmia, and one patient experienced chondritis.

All procedures were successful, according to the researchers.
