APA President-Elect expects increased research to improve diagnostic, treatment measures

SAN FRANCISCO — Jeffrey A. Lieberman, MD, President-Elect of the American Psychiatric Association, addresses the challenges facing the field of psychiatry, particularly the need for increased scientific research that can explain the origins of mental disorders, and better diagnostic measures to effectively identify and treat those illnesses.

Lieberman said that with continued scientific progress, psychiatry will catch up to other evidence-based medicine and "take its rightful place" among other subspecialties in the field of medicine.
