Molecular methods needed to discern Rickettsia species

Certain molecular techniques are required to confirm the type of Rickettsia a child may be infected with to facilitate treatment and to differentiate from other illnesses, such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever, according to study data published online.

Samantha H. Johnston, MD, MPH, of the Children’s Hospital and Research Center in Oakland, Calif., and colleagues presented data on three children from California — two of whom were siblings — who had been infected with the tick-borne Rickettsia species364D.
