ORLANDO, Fla. — Scott D. Cummings, PT, CPO, FAAOP, and Mark D.
Muller, MS, CPO, FAAOP, president and president-elect of the American Academy
of Orthotists and Prosthetists board of directors, presented the Titus-Ferguson
and Distinguished Practitioner Awards during the opening session of the 2011
Annual Meeting and Scientific Symposium.
This year’s Titus-Ferguson Award was presented to Karl D. Fillauer,
CPO, FAAOP, chief executive officer and chairman of the board for the Fillauer
Companies Inc. Fillauer, the third generation of his family to be involved in
O&P, received the award for a lifetime of service to the profession. He
thanked the Academy for the honor, which also was bestowed upon his father,
Carlton Fillauer, CPO, in 1994.

“I’ve seen this evolve from an industry to a profession,”
Fillauer said.
Gary G. Bedard, BSc, CO, FAAOP, clinical application liaison at Becker
Orthopedic, received the Distinguished Practitioner Award for his dedication to
the O&P profession and demonstrated leadership among other practitioners.
At the annual business meeting, several more people were aknowledged for
their hard work and dedication to the field of O&P.
“I want to make sure that as I announce the 2011 awards bestowed
upon our colleagues today, the announcements will be short but the
accomplishments of these awardees are lengthy,” Muller said.

The Clinical Creativity Award was presented to Phil Stevens, MEd, CPO,
FAAOP, for “his effective use and implementation of evidence-based
practice,” Muller said.
Todd F. Anderson, CP, FAAOP was posthumously awarded with the Clinical
Commitment Award, which recognizes Academy members who have quietly
demonstrated their commitment to the ABC Code of Professional Responsibility to
improve the image of the profession.
“Through his years of committed work to the profession as a
clinician, educator and leader, clearly he is deserving of this
recognition,” Muller said. “As many of you know, Todd passed away
unexpectedly this year but his contributions to the profession live on.”
Joan E. Sanders was presented with the Research Award, which recognizes
those members of the Academy performing the most outstanding research in the
field.
The 2011 Outstanding Educator Award was presented to Edward Haddon, MEd,
CO, who developed the orthotic technical program at Century College and has
