Oral, IV antibiotics comparable for acute osteomyelitis in children

Oral antibiotics were just as effective as IV antibiotics via a peripherally inserted central catheter for treatment of acute osteomyelitis among children, according to study findings published in JAMA Pediatrics.

“The route of administration chosen for outpatient antibiotic therapy has obvious implications for the overall experience of the child and his or her caregivers,” Ron Keren, MD, MPH, of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and colleagues wrote. “The peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) are effective for delivering high concentrations of antibiotic but are fraught with infectious, thrombotic, and mechanical complications.”
