  • Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic, progressive and multifactorial disease characterized by degenerative and inflammatory processes affecting joints and surrounding tissues, resulting in pain and functional disability. Despite the availability of practice guidelines for the management of OA, inadequacies in practices of clinicians and patients have been found, leading to suboptimal outcomes. This publication series explores a structured, multidisciplinary approach to care to optimize long-term outcomes for patients with this chronic disease.

Target Audience: The intended audience for the activity is primary care physicians and other healthcare professionals involved in the treatment of patients with osteoarthritis.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this activity participants should be able to:

    • Describe the diagnostic criteria for OA that assist in the diagnosis and treatment of OA in patient populations that are not diagnosed or inadequately treated.
    • Evaluate patient-centered, multimodal approaches in the chronic management of osteoarthritis.
    • Assess patient-specific parameters and comorbid conditions when evaluating treatment options for patients with osteoarthritis.
    • Examine preventative, multidisciplinary, multimodal, and self-management strategies that assist in the overall management of osteoarthritis.
