Norwegian OD named International Optometrist of the Year

CHICAGO – Hans Bjoern Bakketeig, OD, of Norway, was named the 2012 International Optometrist of the Year by the World Council of Optometry for his outstanding contribution to the profession. He received the award here at WCO’s meeting.

Dr. Bakketeig has worked on various humanitarian projects around the world for 17 years, with the last 11 spent helping to improve eye health in Moldova, a European country located between Romania and Ukraine.

He has taught eye care professionals in this country to use the latest diagnostic methods and treatments and supplied them with equipment.

Anne Norvik Jervell, OD, chair of the Norwegian Association of Optometry, said in a WCO press release: “Hans’ engagement has strengthened resources in Moldova; the result is a project that will live on and have a lasting effect in the country.”
