  • Diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema are two of the earliest and most common manifestations of type 2 diabetes mellitus, the incidence of which is increasing exponentially, putting hundreds of thousands of patients at risk for visual loss and blindness each year. Understanding how the progression of the disease will affect vision should encourage clinicians to be more vigilant about monitoring the patient’s overall health and early symptoms of diabetes-related issues. Once the disease is detected, careful management is critical to maintain vision. Increasing evidence suggests that anti-VEGF agents may be effective in the treatment and prevention of diabetic macular edema.
