Smaller Pouch, More Discreet Fit
Marlen Manufacturing and Development Company ( http://www.marlenmfg.com) has introduced MiniMax™, a one-piece, disposable drainable pouch that is 30% smaller than the company’s UltraMax™ Drainable.
The smaller size is designed for smaller adults but is also appropriate for many patients and provides an even more discreet profile than the standard-size UltraMax.
The MiniMax is available with a shallow convex or flat flange and features a half-inch starter hole. The pouch features quick accessibility to view the interior of the pouch.
The Marlen “Kwick-Klose™II” Fastener System allows the pouch to fold up securely, providing an even shorter profile.
Another option is the “Flo-Thru™” Charcoal Filter system that continuously filters odors from both sides of the filter.

Anatabloc Gains Approval for First Human Clinical Study
Rock Creek Pharmaceuticals, Inc., has received approval from the institutional review board for the first human clinical study of the safety and effects of nutritional supplementation with Anatabloc® (anatabine) in individuals with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The study will be undertaken in conjunction with the Roskamp Institute of Sarasota, Florida, which has been acting as a research partner in assessing the impact of Anatabloc on AD.
This study developed out of Roskamp’s earlier research work published in the European Journal of Pharmacology and multiple reports of use of the supplement in patients with AD.
The study consists of a six-visit, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel-group trial to evaluate the safety, tolerability, and potential effects of anatabine dietary supplementation in participants 65 and older with mild to moderate AD. Secondary aims are to evaluate the effects of this specially formulated version of Anatabloc on amyloid beta, global outcome, and functional measures of AD.

ThickenUp® Clear Eases Swallowing Difficulties
Nestle Health Science has released Resource® ThickenUp® Clear, an innovative, non-starch-based thickening powder to decrease the risk of aspiration compared to thin liquids for people with dysphagia. Designed to address the challenges of some existing starch-based thickeners, Resource ThickenUp Clear is tasteless, mixes and dissolves easily, and remains clear when mixed with water.
A study presented at the 1st Congress of the European Society for Swallowing Disorders showed a significant reduction in the incidence of penetration and aspiration in dysphagia patients who consumed Resource ThickenUp Clear, made with xanthan gum, compared to thin liquid. Improvement in airway closure time was observed for gum-thickened barium compared to thin liquid barium, demonstrating the ability of this new gum-based thickener to enhance dysphagia patient safety.
