Pediatricians: Antibiotic overuse frequently caused by parental pressure

WASHINGTON — Most primary care pediatricians said they do not believe that their behavior leads to antibiotic overuse, according to study results presented at the 2013 Pediatric Academic Societies Annual Meeting.

“However, primary care pediatricians frequently confront parental pressure to prescribe antibiotics and sometimes acquiesce for social reasons,” wrote study researcher Julia E. Szymczak, MA, PhD candidate in the department of sociology at the University of Pennsylvania. “The perception of parental pressure in ambulatory pediatrics may be a barrier to the implementation of strategies to reduce antibiotic prescribing.”
