Recurrent themes of ASCO: Money and molecules

  • June 7, 2013

CHICAGO — Donald L. Trump, MD, FACP, president and CEO of Roswell Park Cancer Institute, offers his insights on several topics discussed at this year’s ASCO Annual Meeting. One particularly important topic is the impact sequestration will have on reimbursements, research funding and training for the next generation of cancer specialists.

According to Trump, these cuts will not only seriously impact reimbursements and the amount of funding available for research, but will also affect the training of the next generation of cancer specialists. Trump also remarks on the explosion of progress made in personalized medicine. While clinicians are becoming more proficient at defining how certain molecules work and do not work, more progress needs to be made at shortening the length of time from the discovery of biomarkers to the development of viable treatments.
