Generic vancomycin hydrochloride receives FDA approval

The FDA today approved an Abbreviated New Drug Application submitted by Watson Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NYSE: WPI) for vancomycin hydrochloride capsules, according to a press release.

The drug is a generic version of VANCOCIN HCI, developed by ViroPharma Inc. The treatment is intended for diarrhea associated with Clostridium difficile infection and for enterocolitis caused by Staphylococcus aureus, including strains resistant to treatment with methicillin. The generic drug will be available in capsules of 125 mg and 250 mg, and the company has begun shipping the product, according to the press release.
