Overweight, obesity rates rising in China

May 3, 2016

The prevalence of overweight, obesity and central obesity among Chinese adults increased yearly since 2000, despite an increase in leisure-time physical activity, according to a recent analysis of survey data.

“With increased participation in [leisure-time physical activity], we would expect the rate of increase in the prevalence of overweight and obesity to fall over time; however, this expectation was not supported by our findings,” Ye Tian, PhD, of the China Institute of Sport Science in Beijing, and colleagues wrote. “This result might be explained by the fact that the increased [leisure-time physical activity] participation was most evident among normal-weight participants, but was not noted among obese participants.”
