  • Type 2 diabetes mellitus has been associated with significant increases in cardiovascular risk for many patients. Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonist treatment may reduce this risk, both as monotherapy and in combination with insulin. Recent formulations of the GLP-1 agonists have also made management easier, with a less frequent dosing that may improve patient adherence to therapy. In this continuing medical education activity, leading clinicians will discuss the cardiovascular benefits of the GLP-1 agonists, how to best implement combination therapy with insulin, and strategies for improving patient adherence.

Sponsorship Statement: This continuing medical education activity is sponsored by Vindico Medical Education.

Support Statement: This activity is supported by an educational grant from .

Target Audience: The intended audience for this activity is internists and other healthcare professionals involved in the treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the potential role of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1)-based therapies in reducing cardiometabolic risk.
  2. Incorporate evidence-based data into practice on the use of GLP-1 agonists in combination with insulin glargine to effectively treat T2DM.
  3. Assess longer acting GLP-1 agonists for their ability to achieve hemoglobin A1c (HbA1C) targets and minimize adverse events that may affect adherence to therapy.
