  • Statins have had a significant effect on coronary heart disease risk since their introduction. However, a residual risk for cardiovascular events persists. In addition to lowering LDL levels, clinicians must be aware of how to manage patients with low HDL levels and high triglycerides. Statins may have an affect on these lipids as well. This monograph will review the impact of statins on lipid profiles, as well as potential adverse events and drug interactions. Strategies to improve statin safety and compliance will also be discussed.

Sponsorship Statement: This continuing education activity is sponsored by Vindico Medical Education.

Support Statement: This activity is supported by an educational grant from Kowa-Lilly

Target Audience: The intended audience for this activity is cardiologists, endocrinologists, lipidologists and other health care providers who treat dyslipidemia.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Implement strategies for managing patients with statin intolerance and noncompliance, including pre-existing conditions associated with statin intolerance/noncompliance such as hypothyroidism, vitamin D deficiency, depression, and fibromyalgia.
  • Recognize the cardiovascular risk associated with low HDL-C even for patients on statin therapy and appreciate the differences between statins on HDL-C raising efficacy.
  • Improve confidence in the implementation of combination therapy for achievement of NCEP ATP LDL-C and non-HDL-C goals.
  • Apply the clinical trial evidence that support lipid-lowering use in primary prevention and recognize the potential treatment difference for patients based on age, gender, and cultural or ethnic differences.
