John D. Day, MD, on remote monitoring for pacemakers

SAN FRANCISCO — In this video, John D. Day, MD, of Intermountain Heart Institute in Murray, UT, discusses the results of a study presented at the Heart Rhythm Society Annual Scientific Sessions assessing the impact of a remote monitoring system for pacemakers on survival outcomes.

Researchers evaluated a large cohort of patients implanted with a pacemaker or defibrillator, and divided patients into three groups: those who regularly, occasionally and never used a remote monitoring system. Day noted that patients who never used the system were at more than twice the risk for mortality compared with those who regularly used the system, while those who reported occasional use had a mortality risk reduction of approximately 50%.

Day called the findings provocative, but added that why those who used the system experienced improved survival remains to be explained.
