  • This CME activity is derived from a presentation given by Dr. Richard Nesto at a live meeting titled “Acute Coronary Syndromes and After: Current and Evolving Strategies for Managing Cardiometabolic Issues in Patients” presented on April 28, 2012, at the Joseph B. Martin Conference Center at the Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts. It also includes the faculty panel discussion along with an audience question-and-answer session. Dr. Nesto discusses how to manage dysglycemia in the ACS setting. He also presents current clinical trial data in patients post-ACS and explores strategies for further risk reduction in both pre-diabetic and diabetic patients.

Target Audience: This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of cardiologists who see patients with both cardiometabolic issues and ACS; internists and other primary care physicians who help manage ACS patients and their metabolic problems in follow-up; and endocrinologists and diabetologists who manage patients with type 2 diabetes and/or other drivers of cardiovascular risk.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this activity participants should be able to:

  • Examine the relationship between diabetes and acute coronary syndromes (ACS).
  • Discuss current clinical data related to insulin management of hyperglycemia in the ACS setting.
  • Evaluate current and emerging pharmacologic options for cardiovascular risk reduction and explore their therapeutic potential in the post-ACS patient with prediabetes or diabetes.
