  • Dyslipidemia management has traditionally focused on controlling elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels. However, several recent trials have highlighted the importance of non-LDL lipid parameters, such as high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and triglycerides (TG), as important targets for cardiovascular risk modification. On the strength of these data, medical societies are embracing atherosclerotic markers other than LDL-C as important targets for treatment in patients with dyslipidemia.

Sponsorship Statement: This continuing medical education activity is jointly sponsored by Vindico Medical Education and CT_logosm_EduLabs.gif

Support Statement: This activity is supported by an educational grant from genentech_sm.gif

Target Audience: The intended audience for this activity is cardiologists, internists, lipidologists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the treatment of patients at risk for cardiac events.

Learning Objectives:  At the conclusion of this series, participants should be able to:

  • Assess screening procedures and risk stratification techniques to identify patients at risk for coronary heart disease.
  • Apply new clinical evidence and guidelines for primary and secondary prevention in patients with lipid disorders.
  • Evaluate emerging lipid-modifying therapies that favorably alter lipid metabolism; prevent, slow, or reverse atherogenesis; and lower cardiovascular risk.
  • Examine the correlation between cardiovascular events and low levels of HDL and analyze current research and understanding on the role of the HDL receptors and the mechanisms underlying HDL function, metabolism and production.
  • Integrate strategies to evaluate HDL based on the interpretation of clinical data, to effectively manage HDL and decrease cardiovascular risk and overall atherosclerosis development.
  • Tailor lipid treatment approaches to the particular needs of specific patient populations, including those with comorbid diseases.
  • Implement patient-centered approaches that increase compliance and adherence to therapeutic regimens to improve cardiovascular health and patient health literacy.
  • Define atherogenic dyslipidemia and employ methods into practice to diagnose and treat the disorder promptly.
