Rethinking the ‘zero calorie’ lifestyle

Martha Gulati, MD, MS, FACC, FAHA

Recently, an article was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition indicating that diet sodas and other artificially sweetened items may increase type 2 diabetes and obesity. Observational data have supported this conclusion for some time, but this particular study, which examined 66,000 women aged older than 14 years, showed that the risk for developing diabetes was much higher in those women who drank diet soda — 15% higher in those consuming less than one can of diet soda per week (<500 mL) and 59% higher in those drinking 1.5 L per week. What is it about artificial sweeteners that may be causing these major health problems?

Why every female cardiologist should read 'Lean In'

Martha Gulati, MD, MS, FACC, FAHA

I’ve finally been able to read Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg. I had already heard her on the news, seen her on television and read reviews of her book, and I thought that I had heard little that would help me. I also found it quite interesting that all the interviews related to her book were conducted by women, never by men (none that I saw anyway). So, part of me felt that this was a conversation among women only, and I feel this conversation needs to involve men as well. But that has nothing to do with this very well-written and thought-provoking book, and certainly the author did not decide who would interview her.
